“Q: I am approaching retirement and would like to know my Social Security options. What should I do?

A: Many people decide the optimal course of action is simply to apply for benefits as soon as they are eligible, but that is a decision that could have consequences for the rest of your life. Careful analysis of the various options available reveals that they could be leaving hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table. Income reduction from taking Social Security early are significant, as are the increases gained by waiting until age 70. The calculations become even more complex when options for spousal benefits and possible tax consequences are considered. The best strategy for you will be determined by various factors such as your health and life expectancy, income needs, employment and marital status, and other resources available to supplement your retirement. Navigating through the various Social Security  strategies can be daunting, so be sure to seek out advice from a CFP® Professional to help maximize your benefits.
